In Kingston Falls, Detective Gabriel Serpent's vacation is interrupted by a corpse whose buttocks, protruding from the ground, are being used as a bicycle stand. With his police station facing closure, Serpent is determined to prove his worth by leading the investigation. But the arrival of Cynthia Quinn, nicknamed "The Tracking Dog", a formidable detective with a drinking problem, throws everything into disarray.
