Your collection, explained.

Sign-in information

Supabase handles email/password authentication and Google sign-in when enabled. Serial stores a unique account identifier, username and optional display name. Supabase stores your email and manages password credentials. Your password is transmitted over HTTPS to Supabase for authentication; it is not stored in your TV diary.

Your browser stores login-session tokens so you stay signed in. Log out on shared devices. Serial accounts do not use ChatGPT or OpenAI accounts.

What is saved and where

Serial stores your chosen shows and shelves, last-watched episode, ratings, review text, reminder preferences, and the time an entry was updated. It also keeps a private history of shelf/progress changes, small snapshots for saved titles, and shared metadata for relevant shows. Full episode lists are fetched from TVmaze and temporarily cached, not copied into the user database.

These records are held online in a Supabase PostgreSQL database. Cloudflare Pages hosts the website. They are associated with your account, rather than only with a device. The same account can access its collection on another device.

Who can see it

The public catalogue is visible to everyone. Diary requests are restricted to the signed-in account, so other visitors cannot view your saved collection or reviews through the website.

“Private” does not mean hidden from the service operator. The site owner and authorized hosting administrators may have administrative database access for operating and supporting the service. The collection is not end-to-end encrypted.

TV metadata, images, and external links

TVmaze supplies show information, images, and schedules. Title searches and show requests may be sent to TVmaze, but Serial does not send your review text or account identifier with those requests. Poster images load from TVmaze’s image service, which receives normal browser request information such as your IP address. IMDb and official website links open third-party sites with their own privacy practices.

Calendar subscriptions

If you connect a calendar, Serial creates a private subscription link. Anyone with that link can read the upcoming schedules of shows you follow for reminders. The feed does not include your reviews, rating history, or last-watched progress. Your calendar provider receives the subscription link and events when you add it.

Choose Upcoming → Connect calendar → Disconnect link to revoke the link, and remove the subscription from your calendar app. Your calendar provider may retain events it already downloaded.

Changing or removing saved records

Open a saved show to edit it or choose Remove from collection. Removal deletes that diary entry from the active application database; the history of collection changes remains until you clear it on your Account page. You can also turn off reminders or disconnect your calendar link. Hosting logs or backups, where retained by the hosting services, are outside these per-entry controls.

There is currently no separate Serial account-deletion screen or published backup-retention schedule. Do not include sensitive personal information in reviews.

Cookies, logs, and advertising

Supabase login tokens are stored in browser local storage. Cloudflare and Supabase process requests needed to operate the service. The current Serial application does not include advertising trackers or a third-party analytics script. Hosting services may retain operational request and error logs.
