Nine-year-old Petka Odintsov, a smart aleck, has no friends, but he does have his grandmother, Aurora Alexandrovna. In such company, Petka's future is at risk. He has no prospects other than books and lessons. But one day, Petka commits a heroic act, and a tabby cat, Vaska, appears in the Odintsov household. The Odintsovs' lives change dramatically—the grandmother declares war on Vaska.
