A disgraced woman finds refuge on the island to raise her son, Giannos. Intelligent and perceptive, he grows up bearing a stigma, as the villagers treat him with scorn and suspicion, regarding him as a "bastard" and an "outsider." In his heart, the purest of feelings awakens for a girl unlike the others of her time: Margarita.
